Peak season has arrived, and costs are rising at every layer of the network at the same time.
This week’s stories share one thread. Warehouse space and trucks are tightening, diesel just set a record, and small data errors are now causing real delays. The operators who plan around delivered cost, not quoted rates, will protect margin through Q4.
The Top 5 Shipping Stories This Week
1. Warehouse and Truck Capacity Tighten as Holiday Inventory Moves Downstream
The September Logistics Managers’ Index rose to 70.2, its second-highest reading in four years. Warehousing capacity fell 14.2 points to 39.3, the fastest contraction since March 2022. Transportation capacity also contracted to 34.4, while transportation prices climbed to 92.7.
What It Means for Shippers
The squeeze is arriving with the inventory, not after it. Much of this stock still sits at the wholesale level and typically moves toward retailers around mid-October. Having product on hand no longer guarantees you can receive, store, or ship it on time.
- Lock in overflow storage, dock appointments, and labor before the mid-October handoff begins
- Build receiving, labeling, and kitting into your capacity plan, since every extra touch costs more in a tight network
- Favor flexible capacity you can release after peak over fixed space you will carry into Q1
- Shorten how long you rely on quoted transportation rates, because they are moving quickly
Watch your inbound schedule closely over the next two weeks. That is where the pressure lands first.
2. Diesel Sets a New All-Time High Heading Into Peak
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that September diesel averaged $6.29 per gallon, a new record. That is up 15.2% from August and 67.8% from September 2025. Regular gasoline averaged $4.36 per gallon, up 7.3% month over month.
What It Means for Shippers
Fuel does not stay on the surcharge line. It flows into parcel, LTL, truckload, drayage, and 3PL pricing. At these levels, small shifts in zone mix or miles traveled have an outsized effect on cost per order.
- Reforecast Q4 transportation spend at current diesel prices, not last year’s averages
- Track fuel surcharges separately from base rates so you know which number is actually moving
- Review your Zone 6 and 7 volume, where percentage-based fuel surcharges add the most dollars per package
- Compare zone skipping, regional carriers, and consolidated linehaul on delivered cost
When fuel is this expensive, carrier and service selection becomes a margin decision on every label.
3. Golden Week Blank Sailings Put Mid-October Asia Cargo at Risk
Maersk reported that Asia to North America demand remains elevated, with vessel delays affecting schedules. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd blanked two Gemini Cooperation sailings on TP8 and TP12 around Golden Week. Cargo arriving in mid to late October could feel the impact, with typhoons and Panama Canal draft limits adding risk for East Coast freight.
What It Means for Shippers
A booking confirmation is not an arrival plan. C.H. Robinson notes that congestion and port omissions can make scheduled capacity unusable, even when vessel space exists on paper. For holiday inventory, the real question is whether your service can recover from a missed connection.
- Review post-Golden Week bookings for rollover risk, port omissions, and transshipment dependence
- Line up a second service option and an alternate gateway before you need them
- Hold safety stock on fast movers that rely on a single ocean connection
- Delay promotions on affected SKUs rather than launching against inventory still at sea
If your holiday stock is on the water now, confirm the recovery plan this week.
4. Customs Delays Are Starting in Master Data
Mexico’s transition period for the electronic customs valuation declaration, or MVE, ended September 30. Importers must now file it electronically, with invoices, contracts, and payment records supporting the declared value. In the U.S., CBP has been voiding importer of record numbers when identity information is incomplete or inaccurate.
What It Means for Shippers
A shipment can be packed, sold, and ready, then stopped at the border by one bad field. A voided importer number cannot be used to enter goods at all. Mexico has also tightened classification rules, and incorrect tariff codes can now trigger suspension procedures.
- Confirm your Form 5106 lists your actual business address, email, and phone number
- Make sure the email on file for CBP notices is monitored by someone who will act on it
- Assign clear ownership of MVE filings and check that invoices match declared values
- Audit product classifications, NICO codes, and country of origin data before peak shipments
Clean master data is now a delivery-time issue. Treat it with the same urgency as carrier selection.
5. Maersk Adds a Weekly Freeport, Texas Call to Its Gulf Service
Starting October 21, Maersk’s Gulf Ocean Express will call weekly at Freeport, Texas, alongside Houston and New Orleans. The service continues south to Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama. Maersk says the call gives cargo near Freeport a closer port and may support inland links to El Salvador and Nicaragua.
What It Means for Shippers
A new port call can change your delivered cost without changing the ocean rate. Drayage miles, terminal handling, cutoffs, and inland availability all shift with the gateway. This matters most for Gulf-region shippers and 3PLs managing Central America flows.
- Compare Freeport against Houston and New Orleans on total landed cost, not ocean freight alone
- Confirm first sailing dates, equipment availability, and cutoff times before shifting volume
- Pilot the route on lower-risk lanes before moving time-sensitive peak inventory
Watch the first few weeks of transit performance before committing peak volume to the new call.
The Bottom Line
This week’s stories point in the same direction. Space, trucks, fuel, and border compliance are all getting more expensive at once. Your shipping rate and your actual shipping cost are two different numbers, and that gap widens in peak. The operators who hold margin this quarter will plan around delivered cost, build backup options early, and fix their data before it costs them.
