How to Troubleshoot Automations Using the Automations Log

VESYL’s Automations Log is a powerful tool that lets you see exactly what rules were applied to each order, in what order they ran, and why they had a specific outcome. This visibility helps you quickly identify errors, confirm that rules are working as expected, and fine-tune your automation setup.

Why Use the Automations Log?

You may want to review the Automations Log when:

  • An order has the wrong service, status, or flag applied.
  • You’ve recently added or changed a rule and want to confirm it’s running correctly.
  • You need to troubleshoot unexpected results, such as an order being skipped, misrouted, or not tagged.
  • You want a clear audit trail of what logic was applied to each incoming order.

How to Access the Automations Log

  1. Navigate to the Automations Page in your VESYL dashboard.
  2. At the top of the page, click the Log tab.
  3. You’ll see a chronological list of all automations that have been applied to incoming orders.
  4. To investigate a specific order, enter its Order ID in the search field. This filters the log to only show the rules applied to that order.

Understanding the Log

In the Automations Log, you’ll see:

  • Automation Name – The rule that was triggered.
  • Condition Outcome – Whether the conditions for that automation were met (True/False).
  • Action Taken – What VESYL did when the rule applied (e.g., set service to USPS Priority Mail, mark as Residential, change status).
  • Timestamp – When the automation ran relative to when the order was imported.

This breakdown helps you identify exactly why an order ended up with its final status, service, or tags.

Best Practices for Troubleshooting

  • Check Order of Operations – Remember, automations run top-down. If an unexpected rule fired first, it may have blocked or changed later rules.
  • Look for Paused or Deleted Rules – If you don’t see an automation you expected, make sure it’s active.
  • Verify Conditions – Sometimes an automation doesn’t fire because the condition wasn’t met (e.g., “Is Domestic=True” didn’t apply).
  • Test Fixes on One Order First – After adjusting a rule, rerun automations on a single order to confirm it works before applying to all.

With the Automations Log, VESYL gives you transparency into your automation process, making it easier to diagnose issues, confirm logic, and ensure your orders flow smoothly.
